The 2 seater Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy's air superiority fighter, tactical reconnaissance platform and its fleet defense interceptor.

The F-14 replaced the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in 1974 and in turn replaced in 2006 by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in the US Navy. The F-14A Tomcat is still in use today with the Iranian Air Force.

Top Gun[]

F-14A Tomcats are first shown landing and taking off from the USS Enterprise. Two F-14's were piloted by Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and Bill "Cougar" Cortell, with Nick "Goose" Bradshaw and Sam Wells as their Radar Intercept Officers (RIO). They were on a mission to intercept two MiG-28 aircraft in the Indian Ocean. While the first MiG engaged Cougar's F-14, Maverick began to intercept the second MiG, and was able to drive it off. As Cougar's F-14 was engaged by the MiG, he told Stinger that he was being tailed upon but was ordered to not fire until so. Maverick began to engage the MiG that was engaging Cougar, and knowing that he can't engage it, decided to mess with it by going upside down and flipping the bird at its pilot, while Goose took a picture of its pilot. As a result, the MiG-28 then retreats. However, the encounter resulted both of their aircraft running out of fuel.

F-14A Tomcats mostly serve as the main fighter jets for the TOPGUN school at Naval Air Station Miramar. On the first training hop, Maverick and Goose flew in one F-14A where they engaged Jester in his Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Although Maverick was able to defeat him, he broke a major rule of engagement by flying below 10,000 feet as well as buzzing the control tower despite being notified not to do so, leaving him to be reprimanded by Mike "Viper" Metcalf. On the 19th training hop, Maverick and his wingman Hollywood were assigned to engage Viper, which results him abandoning his wingman so he can chase Viper himself, only for Jester to defeat him.

Top Gun: Maverick[]

The Grumman F-14A Tomcat makes an appearance in Top Gun: Maverick used by the "Rogue Nation". Due to Maverick’s astounding piloting ability, he still manages to take out multiple Sukhoi Su-57’s with the element of stealth.
